When to Start Braces

When Should I Start Preparing For Orthodontic Treatment?

young child smiling after their orthodontic evaluation at Dr. C OrthodonticsThe American Association of Orthodontics recommends patients see an orthodontist by the age of 7, the age when it's most important to ensure the teeth are properly growing in. At a young age, minor orthodontic procedures like baby teeth removal, the use of limited braces to close gaps in the teeth, or using an oral appliance to correct a crossbite or treat sleep apnea can be beneficial.

In most cases, orthodontic appointments with our youngest patients are designed to help our team monitor and prepare patients - and parents - for potentially needing braces and other orthodontic solutions after permanent teeth have arrived. Usually, a child's permanent teeth have grown in by the age of 11, 12 or 13.
